Don’t let the greenhouse stand empty during the winter

Growing in your greenhouse during the winter is not only possible, but many flowers and vegetation thrive in the cooler months.  Winter greenhouse growing allows gardeners to extend the season, creating year-round gardening opportunities.

According to one of the country’s leading glasshouse makers, Griffin Glasshouses, if you are an avid greenhouse gardener, there is no reason to wait until Spring before you start.

“Many people assume in the winter months that greenhouse growing is off limits for growing, but this is simply not the case.  Basically, anything that will grow outdoors during the winter will grow indoors,” said Linda Lane, managing director of Griffin Glasshouses.

“A wide variety of vegetables grow well during the winter, and you can enjoy the rewards of having freshly grown produce.  These include spinach, turnips, garlic, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and radishes.

“Even many flowers naturally grow very well in the cooler months, these include pansy, freesia, primrose, amaryllis and snapdragon.  It is advised to keep your greenhouse heated.  Keeping it frost free in the winter is essential for maintaining steady growth of plants.  The alternative is to cover plants with horticultural fleece during frosty periods.”
