HISTORIC CORNISH WALLED GARDEN’S NEW GREENHOUSE

A replacement greenhouse installed in a Cornish walled garden is part of a major restoration project of what is described as “a superb example of one of the few remaining walled gardens complete with Victorian greenhouse.”

Griffin Glasshouses, the Hampshire based designers and builders of classic bespoke greenhouses, were commissioned by the owners of Tresillian House, a Victorian manor house near St.Newlyn East in North Cornwall, to design and build a replacement structure for the historic walled garden.

“We replaced the Victorian original with a much larger lean-to glasshouse with a porch and partition, benching and cold frames,” says Griffin managing director, Linda Lane.

The 2.5m x 15m greenhouse is made from state of the art, powder coated aluminium that blends in with the ancient brick walls surrounding the garden.   The bricks used are of a type made only in the early 1700s.

“A shallow pitch was required because of the height of the walls and we used our Classic patented glazing system that insulates the glazing bars, helping overcome heat loss,” explains Linda, who is the daughter of the founder of Griffin Glasshouses.  It remains a family business with several members working in it.

The new greenhouse in the Tresillian House walled garden benefits from a life-time structural guarantee.   The Victorian house is on the site of a considerably older building.
